White Elephants

The expression Elefante Blanco, white elephant designates in Latin America a great public work that has remained incomplete and abandoned. My ongoing visual works portrays the many examples of abandoned infrastructure on the continent.

First chapter: The Peron hospital in Buenos Aires
It was to be the largest public hospital in Latin America, the one wanted by general Peron in the district of Ciudad Oculta, in the south of Buenos Aires. But he did not have time to conclude it because of the military coup of 1955. The building, called Elefante Blanco, the white Elephant, still remains there abandoned, in the center of a district where rules marginalization, unemployement, violence and consumption od drug.
